SABINE FELBER
"Flüchtige Begegnung"
Dec 16, 2006 – Feb 25, 2007
at Gallery Jan Schlütter, Cologne, Germany
room4art and Gallery Jan Schlütter are presented photography and text by the artist Sabine Felber under the titel "Flüchtige Begegnung" ("Fleeting Encounter"). The work is part of her project "Stadt Träume" ("City Dreams"), for which she takes pictures in cities all over the world.
Sabine Felber's photographic work does follow the much postulated principles
of objectivity. As an artist, she is far more interested in playing with people's
perception of the world. Her images reflect reality while at the same time offering
the viewer a glimpse into an imaginary world. She aims to create a world from
her perspective rather than a replica of real life, opening up the beholders'
eyes by creating spaces which release their imaginative powers. Every one of
Sabine Felber's pictures tells a story and these stories are the driving impulse
behind her photography. However, she does not force these narratives upon her
viewers. They guide her as she composes her pictures and bring her artwork to
life, without making explicit exactly what story is being told. Instead of using
her art to communicate her own thoughts and ideas, inspired by literature, music
and places she has visited, Sabine Felber aims to transform her audience into
protagonists. As they contemplate the image in front of them and immerse themselves
deeper and deeper into the picture, an imaginary image – a new story evolves
inside them.
Photography is often associated with snapshots. However, there is a great deal
more to the artistic process of capturing an image. The snapshot is a by-product
but this is exactly what Sabine Felber produces in her pictures. This means
that in the course of creating an artwork, she maintains control over her photographic
creation at all times. Colour and form play an important role in her work because
the way an image is created ultimately defines how the subject is portrayed.
